Paul's skillfully turned and manipulated painted pots, jugs and bowls have been delighting collectors for over 40 years, so it is a real honour to be hosting him here at the gallery.
Paul qualified in Studio Ceramics in 1977 at Harrow School of Art. After a short period teaching in London, he relocated to Cornwall, where he established his pottery, moving to his present studio in 1989.
The unique character of Paul Jackson’s work derives from two interrelated processes. Each piece is first thrown on the wheel, then subtly altered in form – giving every pot an individual character and strength defined by a journey of discovery. The journey continues during decoration, where the pot’s elegance and sense of balance grow directly out of Paul’s concern for harmony between form, colour, and the painted surface.
Paul uses white earthenware to construct his energetic and sinuous forms. The clay allows for the dynamic shaping of the pieces which go on to be given diverse and colourful decoration.
This current collection is testament to the fact that Jackson is always moving forward as he continues to develop his techniques and patterns, there is always something new to delight the collector, his vibrant palate always bubbling under the surface. Influences can be seen from the great tradition of painting that comes from St. Ives school of art, with a nod to Nicholson, Frost and even Wallis.
Paul is an associate of the Penwith Society in St. Ives and he exhibited regularly and widely in both the UK and the US, and his work can be found in many major galleries and private collections.
